Organic Chemistry

Some people may ask, what I am doing with my life. As of late I do the same thing from the time I wake up at about 8 a.m.  to the time I go to bed at about 1 a.m.
Have you ever wondered how medications are made, how certain diseases are cured, why your body does this or that, why some people (like Mary :)) are allergic to everything, how foods react or why cleaners work? Well I can tell you. We all know that God created everything on this earth, but he didn't just throw everything together. He had a very strategic plan. He made everything out of these tiny things called atoms. Atoms work together to form bigger things called molecules and molecules build off of each other into bigger things called molecular compounds.
This is what I study all day everyday. I am getting down to the nit picky details of what this world is made of. It is called Organic Chemistry. Organic chemistry deals with organic compounds made up of carbon atoms. Here is a typical picture of something I study, figure out how it reacts or doesn't react, what it reacts with, how you can change it and even the organic name.
Just to give you a little bit of an insight the real name or IUPAC name of Fructose is  (3S,4R,5R)-1,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxyhexan-2-one. Yes I know how to name this and what that means.  I really find this subject very interesting. Yes, it is incredibly hard and I continue to learn more everyday, I really enjoy the class, it is just extremely difficult and takes a lot of time. I have learned so much, even though I feel like I know nothing. Some examples of things I have learned about are testosterone, estrogen, why people or babies jaundice, different drugs you can buy OTC or  prescriptions and why they work, plus many more things. I have had to dedicate most of my time to this class because it is so much detail and we learn something new every single day, (Except Saturday and Sunday of course) and even with that I am still studying. I have never worked so hard to fail at something so miserably and by that I mean it. Never before have I ever read a text book all the way through each chapter about 3 times doing all the problems and answering all the questions at least twice and I'm still not passing the class. hahah Many of my friends ask me why I study so much, I tell them because even though I study so much I still have so much to learn. The balance is very difficult, but I know I can do it!Not only has this class taught me all about chemistry, but it has taught me to study for something that I want and to never give up. I have broken down crying multiple times over this silly class, and even if I don't pass it this semester I always have next semester. It isn't the end of the world. So just remember, we can do anything we put our minds to. Even in the hardest of days look to the future and you will see that it was all worth it. Keep being fantastic! :)

Recipes

As many of you know, I love to cook as well as I love nutrition. I love learning about it and applying it to my daily life. In one of my nutrition classes this semester, I have to give a 20 minute presentation on something that is nutrition related. I have had the hardest time trying to figure out what in the world to do this presentation on.
I went in and was talking to my friend Matt Schmidt and he gave me the most excellent idea. I know right now in my life I am incredibly busy and I am hardly ever home, but generally when I do go home it is to make me dinner. I know that all of us have crazy busy lives and most everyone is trying to prepare dinner for their families that are both nutritious and delicious.
So I decided that I am going to do my presentation on quick, easy, nutritious meals for a crazy busy person. It will emphasize how people who make homemade meals are healthier than those who eat out everyday and if you just take 30 minutes to prepare them you are making your whole family healthier. This is where you all come in, I love hearing ideas of foods that are super good, and quick to make. Something that isn't the same old hamburger rice or potato bar every night. We all know how to do that. I know that all my sisters enjoy time in the kitchen, so I am asking that you post some of your favorite quick, and easy meals so that I can use them for my presentation. I am thinking I will put them into categories so give me anything and everything you've got.
I know I can of course use pinterest for ideas and things that way but I want to use things that I know will work.
Tell me your input and what you think of this whole presentation idea. Love you all!

The Subway

Many people know my life is super busy and crazy right now. I am currently balancing 16 credits. That doesn't say much about my schedule though. Just a quick run down. Generally I leave in the morning at 8 a.m. and come back for a quick dinner around 5 p.m. then I am back to the library till at least 11 p.m.. You may wonder what in the world I am doing for that long. Right now I am taking Organic Chemistry, this class takes up the bulk of my time not only is the class everyday but Thursdays, I have a 3 hour chemistry lab. On top of that I have to prepare for each day by reading and doing the homework so I don't get "lost" in class. I am also taking 6 Nutrition classes and an Internship. The internship is where I go to elementary schools and help out with school lunches. On an average Monday I am in class for 7 hours.. talk about a long day of classes. I'm not complaining, I did it to my self for a reason.(Mostly so I can graduate sooner) In order for me to stay sane though I have to plan things for the weekend that will keep me entertained and give me a break from my day to day routine.
That's where you all come in. I know most of you know about my hike on October 11! I am so stoked for it I can hardly wait. Currently I only have 6 people coming. I can have 6 more people come and I would love for some of my family to attend. I know that it is far away for a hike, but this isn't your ordinary hike. It is a 9 mile hike in Zions. It is called The Subway. In order for me to be able to hike this, I had to "put in" for it 3 months in advance and I wasn't guaranteed a spot. They do this because the hike is so popular and incredible. If you are interested in hiking it let me know. I will do it on a first come first serve basis... I'm sorry that I can't get everyone there. Even if your spouse doesn't want to hike and you do I would love for you to come down! You can even have a sleep over at my apartment! Anyway I hope everyone is having a fantastic day! :) Please let me know!

Dietitian, Pediatrician, Surgeon, Physician Assistant, Chef

I apologize for the late post everyone. This week has been crazy busy. I had a big chemistry test on Friday and when I have a chemistry test I typically have no time for anything else. I eat, breath and sleep chemistry. Most of you know, chemistry and I are not friends, but for me to do what I want I have to take a lot of it.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about the stupid question, What do I want to be when I grow up? To me this is just the most ridiculous question! I mean I have a list of at least 5 things that I really want to be and I am already grown up.This list does not include being a mother, but yes that is in the plan... So I want to hear a little bit about what everyone thinks of these different area's.

Right now in school my major is Nutrition with an emphasis in Allied Health. This means that I want to do something medically. It is opening doors for me to continue on to Med School or PA School. Lately, though I've been thinking about changing my emphasis to Dietetics. This will allow me to either go to Dietetics school or culinary art school.

After this semester (hoping I pass all my classes), I will have 91 credit hours. Which puts me as a senior!! This also puts a lot of pressure on me to decide what  I want to do.

The pro's and con's about each area:

Dietitian:
-In order to be a Registered Dietitian I will need to go to graduate school. (Potential Schools are U of U, USU, BYU.)
-There are thousands of RD jobs that I could do. I could work with a professional sports team, college team, high school team, a large company who highers dietitians for their company, Eating disorders, Work out gyms, kids etc.
-Average Salary in Utah $67,000 (Everywhere else there salary goes up at least $10,000)
-Easy job that I can pick my hours

Pediatrician and Surgeon:
- MCAT is required for Med School
-U of U is where I'm hoping to go.
- They make a lot of money :)

Physician Assistant:
-A physician's assistant is a very interesting area of work. They work directly under the doctor.
-They will never get sued
-Instead of Med school you go to PA school
-Average Salary $90,000
-University of Utah, Utah State

Chef:
-I LOVE TO COOK!! Whenever I have a bad day I end up in the kitchen or on Pinterest getting ideas for cooking.
-I don't use recipes anymore, unless I really want a specific thing.
-I would get my degree in Culinary Arts, or dietetics.
-I would either have my own cooking show, restaurant or make cook books.
-Average Salary $40,000
-I can choose my own hours.

Anyway this is just a bunch of ideas I have. Give my some input of what everyone thinks!! Hope all is going well for everyone.

Lessons Learned :)

This past week has been very interesting for me. I have learned two very important lessons and I decided I could share them. Hopefully it will give you all a good smile as well as fill you in on what has been happening in my life lately.
The first lesson I learned was, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. I learned this lesson in a very interesting way. The other night Jadin (One of my best friends down at school.) was at my apartment like always. We are in the same chemistry class so we were doing our homework together. After we finished our homework we started talking about this girl named Addie, he thinks she is so cute! (She's also in our class.) But Jadin just doesn't have guts enough to talk to her. I have tried to set him up multiple times, it just doesn't work. He even knows she thinks he's cute! (I don't understand) Long story short, Jadin and I placed a bet with each other. The bet was if the next day in our bowling class if I beat him he would have to either ask Addie on a date or for her number. If I lost I have to have her come hang out sooner than later. (I only placed this bet because the last two weeks he had struggled in bowling and I had beat him.) So the next day in chemistry I told Jadin I was going to kick his butt and bowl a 180!! He laughed and said, "the day you bowl a 180, I will fall over and die." We go to the bowling alley later that afternoon. I was determined, he was determined. It was a close game!! You'll never believe it, I BOWLED A 190!! I was on his tail the whole time.I even asked him why he hadn't tipped over and died yet. He said he just didn't feel it coming yet. I ended up losing the bet because he bowled a 210, but hey I don't know if I will ever bowl a 190 again. I even have proof! :) I was pretty happy about that.
The Second lesson I learned was, getting in the car with a stranger isn't always bad. Okay, let me explain my self. Last semester there was this boy in my chemistry class. I thought he was so cute!! He is this little cowboy who just seems so nice! My friend Kendal decided that he was going make sure this kid was a good kid and then he was going to try to hook me up with this boy (Rhett). So Kendal being the kind kid that he is decided to befriend Rhett. Before I knew it Kendal said, well Rhett has your number and is going to ask you out on a date. The next week Kendal said I talked to Rhett, he is going to call you, but he has been super busy lately. Well I just let it blow over. He never called, it was around Christmas so it wasn't a big deal. I just kind of forgot about it.
I have no classes with Rhett, but I will see him once in a blue moon on campus and let's be honest here, I'll check him out. I don't say hi though because we never have talked before and I don't know if he even knows who I am. Fast forward to Last Friday. I was walking home after class around 3. It was a little chilly, but I had my jacket on and I don't live to far from campus. I was just trying to hurry because it looked like it was about to rain. As I was walking home this white truck pulled up to me. Well I only know one person who drives a white truck and I couldn't figure out why he would pick me up randomly. As the truck slowed down next to me and I looked over it was not who I was expecting. It was RHETT! What do you mean, I was so surprised, confused, shocked, you name it... that was what was going through my head. He waved me over to his truck. So I went hahahaha. He then asked me if I wanted a ride home because it was kind of cold. He said, "I promise I'm not creeping on you or anything, you were just in my chemistry class last semester and it is cold outside." I didn't even hesitate, I said sure I'd love a ride and got in the car. (I mean for real, dreams do come true! hahah) I got in the car and he said so you're Paige right and I said yes. We talked all the way to my apartment, life was great. He is so cute, HE KNOWS MY NAME!  I was so flustered I didn't even tell him to come over whenever he pleases or anything good like that once he dropped me off. When I got home and was walking to the door I just prayed I had my keys with me so I wouldn't make a fool of myself and have to break in. Thankfully I had them. After a long long story, I rode home with a stranger and it was fantastic!!

I Hope you all enjoyed my lessons I learned this past week. I apologize my long story shorts aren't so short. It is kind of a problem I have... I love you all!!
Love, Paige Marie

Eye Makeup Tutorial

This week I decided to be a bit cheesey. About a month ago, Rachel asked me how I did my eye shadow and how I got it to stay on. I decided to do a little tutorial on how I apply my make up, so here goes.
1st thing is first, I apply my eyeliner and mascara. I use liquid eyeliner because it stays on my eyes longer and I switch off mascara all the time.

Next I take a little q-tip and clean all around my eye. On the top of my eyelid I drag the q-tip away from the tear duct and on the bottom I drag up so it is right under  my eye.  The q-tip is slightly damp. (I don't use water proof so I just put a little water on it.)
I then pull out my Neutragena Healthy Skin
Cover-Up. ( I feel like i'm advertising.)
I put the cover up all over my face. Usually between the eyebrows, below the eyes, on the eyelids and around my lips. I also like to cover up any of my little friends that have decided to join me for the day aka ZITS!!
I then take my finger and dab it all in. I generally don't like to
rub because then it comes right off.

Here are some of my nice assortment of colors. Today I used the light blue one,
and the dark purple one.

So the picture to the left is my eye with the light blue applied. It has a nice light color, I switch off between the light blue, white, or cream. Generally, I put it on with my finger, I'm no professional or anything.
Then I take Brush A and put the darker color on the tip of it. I apply it to the bone that arches across the eye. I put it about half way in and just dab the color all across to the out side.  The bone arches downward and I usually just follow it.

I then take the smaller brush, brush B and dab it in the black or a color that is just a little bit darker than  the 2nd color I apply. Sometimes I even will use a Navy Blue so that it will help my blue eyes pop out.
This picture shows what I do with the black color. The eye on our left is the one that is done. You can see that it has a little bit of a C shape at the bottom. I just make it darken up a little and put it a little bit of the dark color on the bottom half of the shadow.

After I put the black on the top of my eye I follow the eye liner in the corner of my eye in just a little bit. It has a little almost triangle look to it in the far corner. I know it looks really dark but that is okay, that is how you want it!!

I then put a base all over my face to even it out the skin tone.  I just use this one, but powder or anything will work. Below is a scary ghost picture of my face haha enjoy it, because it was really awkward to take hahah. I know my eyes look crazy and my face is pale but that is where you get to the next part!
I

I use this blend of tan colors and suck into my fishy face! And I follow the check bone down about half way on both sides. Then I put more on the T (that is on the forehead and down the nose.) I also help blend my eye shadow by usuing the same brush and just lightly touching the eye shadow. Warning: Pull out ward so you don't put the dark eye shadow close to the tear duct.
Then I put some lip balm on my crusty crusts. Thanks to Glozelle haha (Youtube her, she is hilarious!!)

Well that is how I do my make up everyday. I hope you enjoyed!! If you have any questions just let me know.  :)

HAPPY OLYMPICS EVERYONE!

Tonight my roommates and I are all watching the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia! Well not really are we watching them in Russia, I wish we were but we are watching them in our cozy little apartment.I love the Olympics so much they are the one time that world is somewhat all at peace for two weeks. I don't understand why we all just can't get along. Anyway we decided to have some fun.

Questions about the Olympics:

1. When and where were the first modern Olympic Games held?

2. What is the aim of the Olympic Movement?

3. Are the gold medals real gold?

4. How many winter Olympics have their been?

We'll happy Olympics everyone!! Hope you have a wonderful week!

Shopping for the Wise

Living down as school has taught me all sorts of wonderful tricks to shopping at the grocery stores. I love to go and find all the good deals on foods. Many of you know that most stores have sells on meat when they are almost expired, same with bread and almost anything and everything. You just have to look. I love to buy these foods because usually you can just cook and freeze it. If it something like sour cream it usually will be marked down a week prior to the expiration. So make something that calls for sour cream. I also have found a list for in season Fruits and Vegetables! Perhaps this will be beneficial to you, I use it and love it!!
